Vitamin D has been long time recognized as an important vitamin for bone mineralization but recent studies have revealed multiple and complex implications of vitamin D for health, starting with reproduction success, embryogenesis, fetal development and growth, protection against multiple complications during pregnancy and prevention of neonatal morbidities and mortality. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy was associated, also, with long-term morbidities, during childhood. The authors are reviewing the most recent data on the functional role of vitamin D, prevalence, risk factors, evaluation of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy, and maternal, fetal, and neonatal complications of vitamin D deficiency. Current international and national recommendations for prevention, assessment, and treatment of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy are presented
