Abstract:

In the 1950s, when the Cold War struggle grew rapidly, one of the countries in which Soviet Russia, which carried out spyware activities in many countries, tried to provide the activity was Turkey. The Russians entered an intense spy activity in cities such as Istanbul and Ankara as well as in the eastern provinces. A lot of spy scandals, the arrest and trial of the captured spies hit the mark of this period. Turkey, which feels itself directly under the threat of Soviet Russia, has imposed sanctions from the upper border against the Russian spy captured. Even the fact that both of the two spy cases sentenced to death between the 1950s and 1960s were applied to those who spy on behalf of Russia, is important for Turkey to demonstrate its sensitivity to Russian spy activities. The spy event in Erzurum, which was the subject of one of these two cases, was a reflection in the east of the disseminating policy of the Russian historical emiliates. In this study, the importance of the Soviet Russia’s spy activities in eastern Turkey was handled by the Russian spy incident in Erzurum in 1953.
