Abstract:

The increase in private motor vehicles creates conflict in urban space and transportation and increases the problems. In the implementation of transportation systems, the structure and appearance of the city changes, and the space requirement for transportation directly changes the space. For years, the distinctive effect of heavy vehicle traffic and main vehicle roads within the urban fabric has increased; parallel to this, regulations focused solely on accelerating the flow of motor vehicles, and urban open spaces have ceased to function as living spaces for people. In addition, transportation solutions change the image of historical squares in important areas of the city, leaving the identity elements from the past in the background. The study aims to draw attention to the redesign of transportation areas within the urban structure and to the sustainable and balanced distribution of space in urban space arrangements. In this context, in the international framework, data were collected on experiences with the pedestrian-oriented redesign of main streets for some cities in Europe and the USA. The study was based on the evaluation of data based on experiences gained through observation and the analysis of literature data. Written and visual sources were consulted by making a literature review on the development of transportation and the stages of the transportation planning process, approaches towards pedestrian-focused redevelopment of major streets, transportation areas and design within the scope of city image. As a result, integrating transportation elements as a complement to urban space, with public space and life, without damaging the existing city image, by evaluating the experiences in selected world cities will contribute to the design.
