Amaç Bu çalışmanın amacı bir diş hekimliği fakültesindeki diş hekimliği lisans öğrencileri arasında eğitim yılına göre değişen empati düzeylerini belirlemekti. Gereç ve Yöntem Tanımlayıcı nitelikteki bu çalışmanın evrenini Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği fakültesinde 2022-2023 eğitim döneminde öğrenim gören tüm öğrenciler, örneklemini ise çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 558 öğrenci oluşturdu. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilere yaş, sınıf, cinsiyet, ebeveynlerinin eğitim durumları ve gelir düzeyi gibi sosyo-demografik özellikleri içeren bir bilgi formu uygulandı. Öğrencilerin empati düzeylerini değerlendirmek amacıyla 20 maddeden oluşan yedili likert tarzı bir ölçek olan Jefferson Doktor Empati Ölçeği Öğrenci Versiyonu (JSPE-S) kullanıldı. İstatistiksel analiz SPSS programı versiyon 25 kullanılarak yapıldı. Verilerin analizi için bağımsız örneklem t-testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi testi ve Tukey testi kullanıldı (p<0.05). Bulgular Tüm diş hekimliği öğrencileri için toplam ortalama empati puanları 87.46±14.88 olarak hesaplandı. Kadınlarda empati puanı ortalaması 86.75±14.03 iken erkeklerde 88.80±16.33 olarak belirlendi ve bu fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildi (p=0.123). Yirmi yaş altı öğrencilerin empati puanı, 20 yaş üstü öğrencilerin empati puanından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde daha düşüktü (p=0.020). Tüm sınıflara ait empati puanları karşılaştırıldığında, birinci, ikinci, üçüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin benzer empati puan ortalamaları aldığı gözlenirken, dördüncü ve beşinci sınıf öğrencilerinin empati puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu tespit edildi. Analizler sınıflara göre empati puanları arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığını gösterdi (p=0.052). Sonuç Çalışmanın empati bulguları ışığında genel empati ve empati alt faktör değerlerinin birçok parametreye bağlı değişiklik gösterebileceği görülmüştür. Diş hekimi ve hasta arasındaki sağlıklı ilişkiyi sürdürmenin temel bileşenlerinden olan empati konusunun eğitim müfredatına dahil edilmesinin ve empati becerisi geliştirilmesine yönelik stratejiler oluşturmanın öğrencilerin empati değerleri üzerinde olumlu etki yaratacağı düşünülmektedir.
Objective This study aimed to determine the level of empathy among undergraduate dentistry students in a dentistry faculty, depending on the education year. Material and Method The universe of this descriptive study consisted of all students studying at the Faculty of Dentistry of Süleyman Demirel University in the 2022-2023 academic year, and the sample consisted of 558 students who agreed to participate in the study. An information form containing socio-demographic characteristics such as age, class, gender, educational status of their parents, and income level was applied to the students participating in the study. The Jefferson Doctor's Empathy Scale Student Version (JSPE-S), a seven-point Likert-style scale of 20 items, was used to evaluate the students' empathy levels. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS program version 25. Independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance test, and Tukey test were used for data analysis (p<0.05). Results The total mean empathy scores for all dentistry students were 87.46±14.88. While the mean empathy score in women was 86.75±14.03, it was determined as 88.80±16.33 in men, and this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.123). The empathy score of the students under the age of 20 was statistically significantly lower than that of those over 20 (p=0.020). When the empathy scores of all grades were compared, it was observed that first, second, and third-grade students had similar empathy score averages, while fourth and fifth-grade students had higher empathy scores. Statistical analyzes showed no significant difference between empathy scores according to classes (p=0.052). Conclusion In light of the empathy findings of the study, it was seen that the general empathy and empathy sub-factor values might vary depending on many parameters. Empathy is one of the main components of maintaining a healthy relationship between the dentist and the patient. Developing empathy skills in the curriculum will positively affect the empathy values of the students.
