OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between adolescents’ interpersonal styles and family functions and to evaluate the impact of socio-demographic characteristics. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was performed with 296 adolescents who studying in the first grade of a public university's faculty of health sciences. Data were collected by Information Form, the Family Assessment Device (FAD), and Interpersonal Relationship Scale (IRC).Data were evaluated using percentages and frequencies, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskall wallis test. RESULTS: The mean score of the Affective Involvement subscale of FAD (3.17±0.47) was the highest, while the mean score of the Problem-Solving subscale of FAD (2.03±0.59) was lowest. The mean score of nurturing interpersonal relationship style was 33.08 ± 6.27 and mean score of inhibitory style was 7.10 ± 5.14. It was found that gender, parents' education and family income level influenced the perception of family functioning and relation styles. A negative correlation was found between the subscales of FAD and the feeding relation styles (r values between -0.29 and -0.62) and a positive correlation was found between the subscales of FAD and the poisonous relation styles (r values between 0.24 and 0.55) in the correlation analysis. Study results shows that the perception of family functioning is one of predictors of interpersonal relationship styles. CONCLUSION: Improving family functioning can be contribute to strengthen interpersonal relationships, in order to help establish an open and respectful relationships for adolescents
