Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the predictive effect of personality traits on moral disengagement in sports. The research group consists of 422 individuals aged 18 and over, 178 of whom are females and 244 males, from Kayseri and Sivas provinces, who have done sports in the past and are actively engaged in sports. As a data collection tool in the study, personal information form, moral disengagement in sports scale, and five-factor personality scale were applied to the athletes. R (4.1.3) program was used to analyse the data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and simple and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. According to the findings, it was found that personality traits are correlated to moral disengagement in sports. The effect of the dimensions of conscientiousness and agreeableness on moral disengagement in sport was statistically significant (p<0.05 for Conscientiousness and Agreeableness) In addition, the interaction effect of these two dimensions was also statistically significant (p<0.05 for Conscientiousness*Agreeableness). Consequently, personality characteristics are predictors of moral disengagement in sports. It is suggested that personality dimensions that predict moral disengagement should be discussed in detail in future studies.
