Kur'an-ı Kerim'in doğru anlaşılması için yapılan çalışmalar arasında Kur'an sözlüklerinin ayrı bir yeri vardır. Hatta ilk dört asır boyunca yapılan çalışmalar içerisinde bu türden eserlerin oranı sonraki dönemlere nispetle bir hayli fazladır. Bu eserler Garibü’l-Kur'an, el-Vücuh ve’n-nezair, Lüğatü’l-Kur'an, Ma’ani’l-Kur'an hatta Mecazü’l-Kur'an gibi isimlerle adlarılmıştır. Son zamanlarda artan tahkik çalışmaları bu eserlerin büyük bir kısmını günümüze taşımış ve ilim adamlarının istifadesine sunmuştur.
İslam dünyasının ilmi bakımdan en müsmir bölgelerinden biri olan Irak. coğrafyasının merkezinde, Bağdad’da doğup burada yaşayan İbnü’l-Cevzi de Kur'an'ın doğru anlaşılması için yukarıda isimleri verilen Kur'an sözlüğü türünden eserler kaleme almıştır. Üzerinde çalıştığımız ve baştan “dal” harfinin sonuna kadar tahkikini yaptığımız eser de bu türdendir. Adı kütüphane kayıtlarında “Tefsirü Luğati’l-Kur'an” olarak geçen eser muhtemelen onun Nüzhetü'l-a'yuni'n-nevazir fi ilmi'l-vücuh ve'n-nezair adlı meşhur kitabının yeniden düzenlenmiş bir versiyonudur. Zira özellikle “ha” harfinden sonra her iki eser arasında büyük benzerlik bulunmaktadır. Süleymaniye Kütüphanesinin Şehid Ali Paşa bölümünde (nr. 116, 151 vr.) bulunan ve tahkiki tarafımızdan yapılan bu tek nüsha eser görüşümüzü destekleyen ayrı bir delildir. Belki de eser bir başkası tarafından İbnü’l-Cevzi’nin Nüzhetü'l-a'yuni'n-nevazir adlı bu önemli eserinden yararlanılarak yeni bir kitap olarak düzenlenmiştir.
