Abbasoğulları, Emeviler'in iktidarı sürecinde Alioğullarının hilâfet taleplerine ve bu doğrultuda giriştikleri savaşlara destek vermemişler, Alioğullarının çektiği sıkıntılara, eziyetlere karşılık, onlara Emevilere karşı ayaklanmamalarını nasihat etmişlerdir. Fakat Abbasoğullarının 715'ten itibaren başlayan ihtilal hazırlıkları ve takiben Emevileri devirmelerinden sonra kendi konumlarını güçlendirmek, onlara geçen hilâfet makamını meşrû bir zemine oturtmak ve bu makamın kendi hakları olduğu tezini vurgulamışlardır. Abbasoğullarının kendilerini Hz. Peygamberin (sav) Ehl-i Beyt'inden saymaları tabiî idi; ancak onlar, Alioğullarının tarihi olarak yüklendikleri misyona benzer bir avantajı elde edememişlerdi. Bu yüzden Abbasoğulları adına başlatılacak bir hareketin, kısa sürede kendini böyle güçlü bir misyonun öznesi haline getirecek tezlere sarılması gerekiyordu. Bu tezlerin en önemlisi, hilâfetin sadece Abbasoğullarının bilek gücüyle kazandıkları bir şey olmadığını, bu mevkinin onların atalarının hakkı olduğunu ve esâsen atalarının da bu haklarını talep yönünde girişimlerde bulunduklarını isbâta yönelik olanıdır.
