Abstract:

In this study, it was aimed to determine the point of view of parents whose children were educated at the Science and Art Center (BİLSEM) towards gifted children. Participants of the study are 25 parents whose children are educated at BİLSEM. The case study design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. The research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form and content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. Some of the results obtained based on the findings of the research are as follows: Parents of gifted students defined gifted students under two themes, namely the skill-ability dimension and the personality traits dimension. When the expectations of the parents for the future of their children are examined; Three themes have emerged: expectations for education and professional life, lifestyle, expectations for personality and character development, and expectations for to be useful to his or her country and people. While most of the parents think that the possibilities provided to their children are insufficient, there are also parents who think that the possibilities are sufficient and are undecided about this issue. Finally, according to the opinions of the participants, the expectations of the society from gifted children were discussed in five categories: (1) being beneficial to the country, society and humanity, (2) having a high level of expectation from gifted people, (3) being very successful in their education and professional life, (4) the society not having enough knowledge and awareness about gifted people, and (5) they expect the talented to be exemplary individuals with everything.
