Background: Pediatric pain, one of the most difficult situation in clinical field, is not adequately managed by nurses. Nurses' having a good education during their school term, affects their pain interventions. Objectives: To determine student nurses’ competence level in pediatric pain management by their care plans. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 3rd and 4th grade students of a university in Pediatric Nursing course. The Care Plan Evaluation Form (analyzed by numbers and percentages) and the demographic data form (analyzed by numbers, percentages, mean) was used. Results: A total of 200 students were reached, 176 (mean age 20.72±1.071) from 3rd grade and 24 (mean age 21.93±1.156) from 4th grade. 6.6% of 1036 nursing diagnoses consisted of pain (3rd grade 7.1%, 4th grade 5.3%). It was found that 59.6% of the 3rd grade and 87.5% of the 4th grade’s pain-related care plans had nursing diagnosis, goal setting and planning; 36.5% of the 3rd grade and 75% of the 4th grade had interventions; 32.7% of the 3rd grade and 75% of the 4th grade had evaluation. Conclusion: Nursing students had incompetency in diagnosis, goal setting, planning, intervention and evaluation stages in pain-related care plans.
