Kentleşme, bilimsel ve teknolojik gelişmeler 21. yüzyıla şekil veren temel aktörlerin başında gelmektedir. Beraberinde şehirler büyümekte ve 60 yaş üzeri bireyler hem sayıca hem de oransal olarak artış göstermektedir. Nüfusun yaşlanması, kentlerin nasıl daha erişilebilir ve yaşanabilir hale getirilebileceğini düşünmeye itmektedir. Rekreatif aktiviteler ise, yaşlı bireyin topluma dâhil olarak aktif ve keyifli zaman geçirmelerine destek uygulamalar arasında yer almaktadır. Bu aktiviteler yaşlı bireylerin değişen kent kimliğine uyum sağlamasında ve kaliteli zaman geçirmesinde önem taşımaktadır. Bu amaçla, dünyanın çeşitli kentlerinde yaşlı bireylerin kendilerini mutlu ve güvende hissedeceği, yaşam kalitesini arttıracak çok sayıda proje hayata geçirilmektedir. Bu kapsamda çalışmada, ’’Yaşlı Dostu Kent’’ kavramına değinilmekte; yaşlı dostu kentlerin rekreasyonel katkısı çevresel, sosyal, ekonomik ve eğitsel boyutlarıyla incelenmektedir. Son bölümde ise İrlanda örneği üzerinden yaşlı dostu kent uygulamalarına yer verilmektedir. Çalışma, bütüncül boyutlarıyla yaşlı dostu politikalara yönelik önerilerde bulunmaktadır.
Urbanization, scientific and technological developments are at the forefront of the key actors that shape the 21st century. Together cities are growing and individuals over the age of 60 are increasing both in number and proportion. The ageing population is pushing us to think about how cities can be made more accessible and viable. Recreational activities are among practices that support the elderly individuals to spend their active and pleasant time in society. These activities are important in the adaptation of older individuals to the changing city identity and in the quality of time spent. For this purpose, a number of projects are implemented in different cities of the world, where older individuals will feel happy and safe, improving their quality of life. In this scope, the study is referred to the concept of "Old Friendly City"; the recreational contribution of old-friendly cities is studied in its environmental, social, economic and educational dimensions. In the last section, the example of the old-friendly towns is listed on the Irish example. The study is presented in suggestions to old-friendly policies with its comprehensive dimensions.
