Abstract:

Each nation has an understanding of music shaped by its own cultural accumulation, and these music finds a presence in a quality that reflects the characteristics of the nation it represents. In the Turks, music was not only used in social and religious phenomena, but also became a state tradition from the past to the present, finding a place in the military field. Looking at the “Köktürk” inscriptions, which are considered the oldest Turkish sources, it is clear that there is a developed military music tradition in the Turks. Military music, which at first showed its existence in a fairly simple structure, eventually reached a more organized and institutional dimension, and it began to be used in different forms for different purposes in wars quite functionally. In this descriptive study, which is based on a literature review, it is aimed to examine the military musical tradition in the Turks before Islam.
