Abstract:

The aim of this study is to study the views of Syrian university students who study in the status of foreign students in Turkey on university experiences. The research is designed with a single state design from the quality research approaches. The study group consists of 14 Syrian volunteer university students studying at a state university. The data of the study was obtained through face-to-face interviews and using a semi-configured interview form. The data collected in the research was analyzed by content analysis. The data was gathered under four main topics: the support provided by the university to Syrian students, the experienced issues, the relations of Syrian students with university components, the recommendations regarding the university. According to the findings obtained, the participants are faced with a language problem in the process of adaptation to the university, they feel lack of knowledge in their fields, they experience a problem of conjunction with Turkish students, and they have difficulty addressing their needs in the area of accommodation. Participants said they did not receive any financial support from the university except for their deposit. Despite this, participants said that all Syrian students in the community have a misconception that they receive scholarships from the state. It also revealed that participants had problems in their relationships with other students at the university, with faculty members and with student business employees. Finally, students in the study group have made various recommendations on the processes of adaptation to the university and the educational-learning possibilities.
