Turizm sektörünün önceliği tüketiciyi memnun ederek ve seyahate katılanlara eşsiz deneyimler yaşatarak tüketim kültürünü ve turizm piyasasını daha fazla geliştirmektedir. Piyasa bağımlılığı yüksek olan turizm akademisi de sektörün gelişmesine yönelik konuları daha fazla önemsemekte ve sektörün görmezden geldiği turist kazaları, hastalıkları ve ölümleri gibi konulardan uzak durmaktadır. Popüler medyada gündem olan ancak turizm araştırmalarında ihmal edilen konulardan birisi seyahatler sırasında yaşanan turist ölümleridir. Türkiye’de turist ölümlerine yönelik yapılan çalışmaların oldukça yetersiz olması bu çalışmanın temel motivasyonunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’de yaşanan turist ölümlerinin nedenlerini, ölen turistlerin cinsiyete, yaşa ve milliyetlerine göre durumlarını Antalya örnekleminde incelemek, turizmin sosyal yönünü ilgilendiren turist ölümleri konusunda farkındalık oluşturmak ve literatüre katkı sağlamaktır. Çalışmada veri kaynağı olarak Antalya ilinde yerel yayın yapan iki gazetenin arşivlerinden yararlanılmıştır. 2017 ve 2018 yıllarına ait gazete haberleri taranmış, toplamda 59 turist ölümü sayısına ulaşılmıştır ve bu turist ölümleri değerlendirilmiştir. Elde edilen verilere göre; ölen turistlerin çoğunluğunu orta yaş grubundaki erkek turistler oluşturmaktadır ve bunlar içerisinde Rusya ve Almanya’dan gelen turistler ön sırada yer almaktadır. Turistlerin ölüm nedeni ise genellikle boğulma ve kazalardır. Bununla birlikte Türkiye’deki turist ölümlerinin toplumsal, mekânsal, psikolojik, hukuki, siyasi etkilerinin farklı disiplinler tarafından derinlemesine araştırılmaya ihtiyacı vardır.
The priority of the tourism sector is to further develop the consumer culture and the tourism market by satisfying the consumer and providing unique experiences to travelers. The tourism academy, which is highly dependent on the market, is also more concerned about the development of the industry and is away from topics such as tourist accidents, diseases and deaths that the industry has neglected. One of the topics that are agenda in popular media but are ignored in tourism research is tourist deaths during travel. The lack of work on tourist deaths in Turkey is the main motivation for this work. The aim of the study in this direction is to study the causes of tourist deaths in Turkey, the situation of the dead tourists according to gender, age and nationality in the Antalya sample, to raise awareness of tourist deaths concerned with the social aspect of tourism and to contribute to literature. The study has been used as a source of data from the archives of two local newspapers in Antalya province. The newspapers for 2017 and 2018 have been scanned, the total number of tourist deaths has reached 59 and the number of tourist deaths has been assessed. According to the data obtained, the majority of the dead tourists are male tourists of the middle age group, including tourists from Russia and Germany. The cause of the deaths of tourists is often drowning and accidents. However, the social, spatial, psychological, legal and political effects of tourist deaths in Turkey need to be thoroughly investigated by different disciplines.
The priority of the tourism industry is to improve the consumption culture and the tourism market further by satisfying consumers and providing unique experiences to travelers. The tourism academy, which has a high market dependence, also attaches importance to the issues related to the development of the sector and avoids issues such as accidents and sickness incurred by tourists as well as deaths. One of the issues on the agenda of popular media, but has been neglected in tourism studies, are the deaths of tourists while traveling. The rather inadequate number of studies regarding tourist deaths in Turkey constitutes the main motivation for this study. The intention of this study is to examine the causes of the death of tourists in Turkey according to their nationality, gender, age and create awareness of the social aspects of the death of tourists from the aspect of tourism by using a sample from Antalya and contribute to the literature. The archives of two local newspapers published in Antalya province have been used as data source in the study. Newspaper news items for 2017 and 2018 were scanned to reach a total of 59 tourist deaths which were evaluated. According to the obtained data the majority of the decedent tourists were male tourists in the middle age group with tourists from Russia and Germany in the forefront. The cause of death of tourists was mainly drowning and accidents. However, sociological, spatial, psychological, legal and political impact of tourist deaths in Turkey need to be explored in depth by different disciplines.
