Abstract:

Abstract:

Local arrangements, whether urban or architectural, have emerged throughout history and in different cultures in a way that will strengthen the inequality between women and men. The social gender roles have caused women and men to experience the city space differently, the public spaces are divided to use mainly by men, and the women are linked to the private space. Until the 21st century, it was impossible to talk about equality between men and women in spatial terms. In traditional cultures, women’s visibility in the public area is often limited, while local communities can find public spaces for women. The wheels that are widely used in Anatolia can be shown as an example of these kinds of gendered places. The Yalvaç neighborhood oven, which is studied in this study, differs in terms of bread cooking techniques according to the similar ones in Anadolu. While production is made in stone oven, the baking profession has an important place in Yalvaç culture as an art that passes from mother to daughter. The study discusses the transformations that traditional neighborhood furns have passed from the past to the present day in Yalvaç life culture. Literature scan, fieldwork and semi-structured conversations and work data have been obtained and interdependent relationships have been interpreted. Changes in urban environment and socio-economic structure over time have shown to have brought the tradition of neighboring furnace to the point of disappearance. The evaluations made may contribute to the current work already carried out to the preservation of this culture.

Abstract:

Spatial regulations, whether it is urban or architectural, appeared in a way to intensify the inequality of women and men throughout the history and in different cultures. Gender roles caused man and woman to experience the urban space differently. Whilst public sphere is reserved predominantly for the use of men, women were associated with private sphere. Until 21st century, it was not possible to speak of an equality of men and women in the sense of spatial extent. Although women’s apparency in public sphere is usually confined in traditional cultures, public spaces specific to women can be found based on local communities. Earth ovens prevalently used in Anatolia may exemplify this kind of gendered spaces. In case of neighborhood bakeries of Yalvac, which is examined within the scope of this study, it differs from its counterparts in Anatolia in terms of bread cooking style. Whereas the production is carried out in masonry ovens, bakery profession takes an important place in Yalvac culture as being a workmanship handed down by mothers to their daughters. In this study, transformations throughout the history of traditional neighborhood bakeries in Yalvac cultural life is examined. By acquiring data through literature review, on-site evaluations and semi-structured interviews, dependent relationships between variables are interpreted. It is observed that emerging changes in build-up area and socioeconomical structure in time caused the tradition of neighborhood bakery to face extinction. Evaluations carried out in this study might contribute to current actions performed to sustain this culture.
