Although the works of Rumi are studied not only in English but also in other European languages, due to the dominance of English, these studies are not known widely. A short internet tour on Rumi studies will prove that. Eva de Vitray-Meyerovitch is the first name to come to mind when one thinks of Rumi in French. Born into a wealthy Aristocratic family in 1909, Meyerovitch studied law and philosophy. She came to know Rumi through Muhammad Iqbal, know as the Rumi of his century. Once she discovered Rumi, she learned Persian and translated almost all works of Rumi and Iqbal into French. All in all, she wrote and translated about forty books, some of which have been translated into Turkish as well. Considering the literal meaning of islam as submission to the will of Allah and also seeing different religions as spokes of a wheel tied to a hub, Meyerovitch claims that the believers of different religions will recognise that they climb to the same place as they reach to the hub or peak. We believe this is something to be emphasized in developing the mutual understanding of communities in their efforts of co-existing.
