Abstract:

Abstract This is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach that aimed to identify the health risks of employees working in a cooperative waste sorting plant attached to a city sanitary landfill in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected during the second half of 2011 through interviews with workers and analyzed using thematic analysis. Exposure to biological and chemical agents was identified to be the most common risk associated with the activity of these workers. It was found that the workers are not assisted in their needs and that self-care is neglected. Health education for the prevention of diseases, as well as government investment in health promotion activities are important strategies for building healthy work environments for these workers.
