Abstract:

This research, which deals with the competencies of the Turkish teachers' speech skills, is designed as a case study and has collected two types of data during the process. The first is the data about the speaking characteristics obtained by the Turkish teachers by speaking the specified speech texts; the second is the data obtained through semi-configured conversations that include the assessment of the Turkish teachers’ speaking skills. The participants in the study, 2 male and 18 female teachers working in the schools associated with the Sakarya National Education Directorate, are a total of 20 Turkish teachers. Teachers have participated voluntarily in research and have different years of experience. Text calling data are evaluated in terms of speech skills (left control, boiling, sound strength, bridge characteristics, measurability, speaking speed, vitality). In the semi-configured conversations, the competence of the Turkish teachers to speak and their speeches in the lessons were discussed by their own assessments. The data obtained from these interviews has been analyzed using thematic analysis from the types of content analysis. As a result, starting from the findings based on the text calling data, the participating Turkish teachers were at the level of "development" in terms of speech skills (at least 1 at least 4 points with 2.1 points in a rating received). According to the findings obtained by the participants in the assessment of their own speech skills, the majority of Turkish teachers found themselves not sufficient and this deficiency was linked to the fact that the speech training courses they received during the bachelor’s training were not useful; they defined their own speech rates as an average; some participants were unable to provide their breathing controls in their speech in their classes; most of them had very little knowledge about the protection of sound health and some teachers had a problem with faringitis.
