I. Dünya Savaşı Sırasında Sansür ve İzmir’de Bir Casusluk Olayı
2023

Abstract:

Censorship and An Incidence Of Espionage In İzmi̇r During World War I
2023

Abstract:

One of the most important measures taken by the Ottoman Empire against all kinds of intelligence activities that would endanger war preparations and military actions of the army during World War I was censorship that imposed a ban on all communications and the press in the country about the army. Censorship centres were established in important places, especially İstanbul, and especially espionage and propaganda activities were followed with great care and sensitivity by censorship officers working in these centres. In this way, towards the end of the war, it was understood that Hadkinsons, one of the English-born Levantine families of the city, were carrying out espionage activities through a Greek lawyer named Hacı Yorgaki in İzmir and a massive espionage network led by Percival Hadkinson had been uncovered. During the searches made in the house and workplaces of the spies caught as a result of the proceedings in İzmir, correspondence written in secret ink was caught. The spies were arrested, taken to İstanbul and to the Court of War. After a long trial, the Court of War decided that the Hadkinsons were informers, not spies. Although the blame was put on Hacı Yorgaki, they were a released with the signing of the Armistice of Mudros and they returned to İzmir. While the Hadkinsons left İzmir after the War of Independence was won, Hacı Yorgaki, who destroyed the families of many Turks and Muslims during the Greek occupation, was sent to İzmir Court of War and he could not escape execution this time.
