Certain modern states, taking into consideration the increasing number of demands of homosexual couples that wish to cohabitate together and gain rights and responsibilities resulting from such cohabitation, legally regulate this kind of cohabitation in various manners. Today, same-sex relations are classified as same-sex marriages, registered partnerships or marital cohabitations. States having the traditional concept of marriage between women and men, in order to meet the demands of homosexual couples for a recognized legal status, have preferred to use to the “registered partnership” classification. Because of the fact that the States’ approaches differ to a large extent, not only in their substantial laws but also in their private international laws, there may be disputed and complicated cross-border situations to be faced by the States
