INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancers are still among the most common causes of cancer-based deaths in all over the world, despite of the latest improvements in the diagnosis, treatment and screening methods. Tumors that are localized in the colorectal region can cause acute symptoms of obstruction that leads to the operations which have high rates of mortality and morbidity. In this study, we evaluated the colorectal cancer cases that were operated electively or in emergency conditions in our clinic, in means of the procedure, tumor localization, pre- and postoperative conditions of the patients retrospectively. METHODS: We evaluated the colorectal cancer cases retrospectively that were operated between January 2009- March 2011 and compared the results. RESULTS: 110 patients were operated because of ileus and 74 of those were diagnosed as colorectal cancer.The median age was 64,59 ( 30-93) and 47 were male and 27 were female.The most common procedure was left hemicolectomy in 24 sigmoid tumors.During the same time interval,the number of patients that were operated because of colorectal malignancy was 206. The median age was 61,95 ( 29-92) and 92 were male and 114 were female. The most common procedure was low anterior resection ( n: 35) in 89 patients that were operated because of rectum cancer.The second common procedure was left hemicolectomy in 39 patients. The median hospital stay was 8,2 days for elective patients and 11,5 days for the patients that were operated in emergency conditions. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Colorectal cancers cause indication of emergency operation, when their first symptom is acute mechanical intestinal obstruction. In these operations, the mortality and morbidity rates are higher and the length of hospital stay is longer than the elective ones. If the screening methods for this cancer become more widespread, the rates of elective operations will be increased and the mortality-morbidity will be decreased.
