The purpose of this descriptive field study was to evaluate characteristics of the third class primary school children and their mothres, to determine perceived relationship of children attending to with their mothers, and to establish factors affected relationship in Karşıyaka/İzmir. Population of the study constitute 6869 pupils of the third class of the school, which continued their education at the 1997-1998 education year in Karşıyaka. Sampling consist of 369 children. Data were collected by using the questionnaire forms which were; “The Characteristics of Children and Their Families Form’’ and “Parental AcceptenceRejection Questionnaire PARQ ”. According to the findings, the average age of the whole children was found as 8.90±0.60; 50.68% of the children were girls; 47.70% of the sample were single child in the family; the average age of the children’s mothers found as 33.43±5.22; 57.18% of the mothers were graduate from the primary school; income of 53.39% of the families were less than their expense; 79.95% of mothers were unemployed; 83.74% of mothers spend time to their children. The average score of the PARQ were 97.69±27.00. The socio-demographic characteristics which affect the total average scores of the PARQ were: the age of the child, sex, birth order of the children in theirs family, the numbers of children in theirs family, and the time spent by the parents to their children. In the light of these findings, the age of the child, sex, birth order of the children in theirs family, the numbers of children in theirs family, and the time spent by the parents to their children as mother-child relationship of a child carrying any of those characteristics defined to prevent in negative mother-child relationship, the protective mental health services, important and advices were given
