Özet:

The concept of health literacy, which is widely used in international literature, is beginning to be used in this country. Health literacy affects health outcomes at the three key points of access to health services, self-care and interaction between the individual and the team providing health service. Health literacy includes not only the skills of reading and writing, but the concept of such health related knowledge as healthy behavior, the correct use of medication, knowing how to make use of health services, understanding and signing informed consent forms, being able to make decisions on self-care and illness management, being able to use home health equipment correctly, and being able to take on the role of care provider, and the ability to evaluate them. Considering factors such as the health of individuals, inequality in health, increasing costs, and the ability to access health information, it is becoming increasingly important to plan and put into practice approaches to increase health literacy. This review will cover the definition of health literacy, its importance, and the Turkish version of various measurement instruments
