Abstract:

Depending on the speed of urbanization, urban areas have started to cover larger areas on the land cover day by day. This situation often causes the misuse of natural areas and agricultural areas around the city. For this reason, determining the areas that the cities will cover in the future by examining their spreading characteristics and directions and the suitability of these areas are of great importance in terms of planning the land. Turkey's capital city has always been a major attraction throughout the history of the Republic because Ankara is an important city with rapid urbanization and quick spatial spread. Therefore, in this study, it is aimed to determine the urban growth suitability of Ankara as a city within the area formed by metropolitan districts. For this purpose, Frequency Ratios and the Analytical Hierarchy Process, which is one of the decision-making methods used in the solution of complex problems, were used via the Geographic Information Systems software, which provides extensive opportunities for planning studies. In this context, natural and human environmental sub-features were determined, data were collected based on these features, and the contribution of these criteria to urban growth was determined by producing new data sets. The natural and human environmental criteria analyzed with these contributions have been overlapped, and the conformity map of growth area of Ankara city has been produced, and these areas have been tabulated and evaluated. According to the findings, it has been concluded that approximately 26% of the current spreading area of the city of Ankara shows high and very high suitability, and nearly 40% of the city has low and very low suitability. The fact that the high and very suitable areas where Ankara can spread in the future, especially in the west and southwest directions, necessitates the planning of the natural and human environment in these areas in order to ensure sustainability and prevent misuse of land.
