Abstract:

This study studies the relationship between fear of crime and life satisfaction in elderly individuals. The research was carried out between January and February 2018 in the old living centers serving within the framework of local governments in the Tuzla, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy and Maltepe districts of Istanbul. The study was attended by 243 people aged 65 and older who served from senior living centers. The data was obtained through the survey form, which includes questions about sociodemographic characteristics and the scales of life-satisfaction and crime fear. The average life satisfaction score of the elderly individuals who participated in the study was 3,2305 ± 0,74583. The total scope of crime fear of the elderly individuals involved in the study is 37,2798 ± 9,46786. The type of crime that the elderly individuals are too afraid is fraud, with an average of 3,7654 points. The study found that older people’s life satisfaction and crime fear scores varied significantly by gender, and that women’s life satisfaction and crime fear scores were higher than men. The study did not find a meaningful relationship between the average life satisfaction levels of elderly individuals and the levels of crime fear. The high or low satisfaction of life does not significantly affect the level of crime fear.
