In patients with end-stage renal disease, hemodialysis is performed via the catheters introduced percutaneously into the large venous structures such as the internal jugular vein, subclavian vein and femoral vein until arteriovenous fistulas become mature. Rarely, arteriovenous fistula may occur accidentally after subclavian vein catheterization. If this kind of fistulae remain untreated, head and neck region upper extremity edema and heart failure can be seen in these patients due to severe and progressive increase in the venous pressure. Here, we present clinical findings and surgical treatment of a fistula between the proximal side of the innominate artery and the left brachiocephalic vein in a patient who had the history of a hemodialysis catheter implantation into the right subclavian vein.
