İlâhî kelâm Kur’an, Arap diliyle ve bu dilin belagat üslûbuyla nâzil olmuştur. Vahyin ilk muhatapları, ilâhî bildirimlerin niyet ve maksadını anlayabiliyorlardı. Her ne kadar bu anlayış ve idraklerinde farklılık olsa da, bu onların ilmî derecelerinden ve aklî yeteneklerinden kaynaklanmakta idi. Herkes Kur’an’ı kendi kültür seviyesi nispetinde anlıyor, anlamakta güçlük çektikleri hususları, bu konuda en yetkili kişi olan Hz. Muhammed’e soruyorlardı. Çünkü ilâhî bildirimlerin tebliğ ve tebyini Kur’an’ın başlıca emirlerinden ve Hz. Muhammed’in de aslî görevlerindendir. Kur’an’ın tefsiri hususunda ayetin ayetle ve hadislerle tefsirinden sonra en mühim tefsir kaynağı sahabe tefsiridir. Onların Hz. Muhammed ile aynı ortamda yaşamaları, onun eğitim ve öğretimiyle yetişmeleri sonucunda cahiliye dönemine ait âdet ve geleneklerden uzaklaşarak İslâm ahlâkı ve hükümleriyle yetişmeleri onlara önemli bir hususiyet kazandırmıştır. Kur’an’ın nüzul ortamını ve toplumdaki ahvali iyi bilmeleri, bazı ayetlerin sebebi nüzulüne vakıf olmaları gibi hususiyetleri sebebiyle ayetlerin mana ve hikmetlerini bilme yönünde Kur’an ve sünnetten sonraki en önemli faktör olarak kabul edilirler. Sahabe nesli de bu sorumluluğun bilinciyle kendilerine düşen bu mühim vazifeyi en iyi şekilde ifa etmişlerdir. Bu makalede tefsirin ilk dönem itibariyle teşekkülünü, tefsir tarihinde sahabenin yeri ve önemini işlemeye çalışacağız.
