This study attempts to apply Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theory to Khaled Hosseini’s critically acclaimed novel The Kite Runner to understand the deeper meanings incorporated in the psychologically loaded novel. This study aims to investigate the relationship between needs and humans’ sense of self by examining the role of psychological needs in the development of the characters’ selves and their contribution to determining the direction of the characters’ lives. The conscious and unconscious motivating forces and efforts to gratify needs have been looked at, using Maslow’s insights as our theoretical framework. Maslow’s insights have been invaluable in unearthing the hidden motivations and needs for self-fulfillment that affect the lives and intentions of almost all characters in the novel. Hosseini’s characters are found very close to life and one can identify with some of their otherwise illogical steps. The details with which he has developed his characters make them ideal for the study as they all have the infallible tell-tale signs that one may associate with living human beings.
