Introduction: The practice of running is an important strategy for the individual to become physically active, however many practices recreational and without professional supervision, in this sense the literature lacks studies on the effects on this practice of exercises for cardiovascular health. Objective: To evaluate the influence of recreational running on cardiorespiratory fitness in adult women. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive, comparative and quasi-experimental study, the sample consisted of 60 adult women divided into two groups: Non-Practitioners Group (n=29), aged (33.17 ± 11.58 years) and Practitioners Group (n=31), aged (40.1 ± 10.5 years). After assessing body mass and height, the body mass index was calculated of the participants. Then, both groups were submitted to the treadmill test to assess cardiorespiratory capacity. Heart rate and subjective perceived exertion (0 to 10) were monitored throughout the test. Results: Regarding body mass index, no significant differences were found between groups. As for the cardiorespiratory fitness test, the results were statistically higher in practitioners group compared to non-practitioners group. Conclusion: The recreational running improves cardiorespiratory capacity contributing to disease prevention and health protection for middle-aged women.
