Matematiksel Kavramları İçinde Barındıran Resimli Öykü Kitaplarının Biçim ve İçerik Açısından İncelenmesi

Erken çocukluk döneminde çocukların gelişimlerinin desteklenmesi, var olan potansiyellerinin açığa çıkarılması ve kavramların öğretilmesinde çocuklara yönelik hazırlanan resimli öykü kitapları önemli bir yere sahiptir. Çocukların sıklıkla karşılaştıkları, farklı öğrenmeler için kullanılabilen ve içinde birçok görseli barındıran resimli öykü kitapları, merak duygularını ortaya çıkarmakta ve onları düşünmeye yönlendirmektedir. Resimli öykü kitapları farklı tema ve konuları içermesinin yanı sıra temel kavram edinimi ve matematiğe yönelik öğretimleri de gerçekleştirebilmektedir. Resimli öykü kitaplarında mekân, zaman, uzamsal öğelerin bulunması, zıtlık, boyut, miktar belirten kavramların sunulması çocukların öğrenmelerini ve matematiksel düşünmelerini zenginleştirmektedir. Bununla birlikte çocukların bu özelliklere sahip, bunları pekiştiren ve destekleyen kitaplarla karşılaşmaları onların gelişimlerini de olumlu yönde etkileyecektir. Bu çalışmada matematiksel kavramların yer aldığı okul öncesi döneme ilişkin resimli öykü kitaplarının biçim ve içerik olarak incelenmesi ile birlikte kitaplarda yer verilen matematiksel kavramların belirlenmesi de amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışma doküman analizi yöntemine dayalı nitel bir araştırma olarak planlanmıştır. Çalışma grubunu ülkemizde 2013-2018 yılları arasında basılan ve içeriğinde matematiksel kavramları barındırdığı düşünülen rastlantısal olarak seçilmiş 100 resimli çocuk kitabı oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada araştırmacılar tarafından ilgili literatür taraması yapılarak oluşturulmuş ve uzman görüşü alınarak son şekli verilmiş olan “Resimli Öykü Kitapları Matematiksel İçerik Formu” veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Resimli Öykü Kitapları Matematiksel İçerik Formu, kitapların genel bilgileri, biçimsel özellikleri, içerik özellikleri ve matematiksel kavramları içeren kısımlar olmak üzere dört bölümden oluşmuştur. Kitapların analizinde genel bilgiler, biçimsel özellikler ve içerik özellikleri frekans olarak hesaplanmış, matematiksel kavramları içeren bölümde ise betimsel analiz yapılmıştır. Çalışmada, resimli öykü kitaplarının konu ve temaları, çocukların yaş grubuna ve gelişimlerine uygunlukları, resim-metin ilişkileri incelenmiş ve kitapların okul öncesi çocukları için yeterlilikleri belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak resimli öykü kitaplarında en fazla mekânda konum/yön ve sayma-sayı-rakam kavramlarının yer aldığı, olasılık kavramına kitaplarda en az sıklıkla yer verildiği ortaya çıkmış, grafik ve örüntü kavramlarına ise resimli öykü kitaplarında hiç yer verilmediği belirlenmiştir.

Review of the picturesque story books containing mathematical concepts in terms of shape and content

Abstract:

In early childhood, picturesque stories prepared for children play an important role in supporting children’s development, revealing their existing potential and teaching concepts. The picturesque story books that children often encounter, which can be used for different learning and contain many visual features, reveal their curiosity and guide them to think. The picturesque story books include different topics and subjects as well as the acquisition of basic concepts and the teaching of mathematics. The presence of space, time, spatial elements, the presentation of concepts that indicate contrast, size, quantity in picturesque story books enrich children’s learning and mathematical thinking. However, the encounter of children with books that have these qualities, strengthen and support them will also have a positive impact on their development. The aim of this study is to identify the mathematical concepts included in the pre-school history books as form and content, along with the study of the mathematical concepts included in the books. The study is planned as a quality research based on the method of document analysis. The study group consists of 100 randomly selected children's books with pictures, which were printed between 2013-2018 and contained mathematical concepts. The study was created by researchers by making the relevant literature scan and was used as a data collection tool, which was given the final form by taking the expert opinion of "Imaging Story Books Mathematical Content Form". The Mathematical Content Form consists of four sections, which include the general information of the books, the formal characteristics, the content characteristics and the mathematical concepts. In the analysis of books, general information, formal characteristics and content characteristics are calculated as frequencies, and in the section containing mathematical concepts, visual analysis is made. In the study, the topics and themes of painted story books, the suitability of children to their age group and development, the paint-text relationships, and the qualifications of books for pre-school children were determined. As a result, it is determined that the concepts of position/orientation and count-number-number are mostly included in the picturesque story books, the concept of possibility is found at least frequently in the books, and the concepts of graphics and illustrations are not given any place in the picturesque story books.

In early childhood, illustrated story books prepared for children play an important role in supporting children’s development, revealing their potential and teaching certain concepts. Illustrated story books, which children encounter frequently, can be used for different learnings and contain many images, will reveal their sense of wonder and encourage them to think. In illustrated story books; presence of spatial and temporal elements and presentation of concepts indicating contrast, dimension and amount enrich children’s learning and mathematical thinking. The aim of this study is to examine illustrated story books that contain mathematical concepts for preschool period, in terms of style and content. The study was planned as a qualitative research based on the document analysis method. The sample group consisted of 100 illustrated children’s books published in Turkey between 2013-2018 and selected randomly. In the study, the “Form for Mathematical Content of Illustrated Story Books”, which was prepared by researchers upon the literature review and finalized according to expert opinion, was used as data collection tool. The Form for Mathematical Content of Illustrated Story Books consisted of four sections as copyright page data of books, stylistic properties, content properties and mathematical concepts. The data were collected by researchers between May-June 2018. When analyzing the books; copyright page data, stylistic properties and content properties were calculated as frequency and the descriptive analysis was conducted in the section including mathematical concepts. In the study, the subjects and themes of the illustrated story books, their convenience for children’s age groups and development, and illustration-text relationships were examined and the adequacy of the books for preschool children was determined. As a consequence, it was revealed that illustrated story books gave place to concepts such as position/direction in space and counting-numbers-digits the most and to the probability concept the least. On the other hand, it was determined that illustrated story books never gave place to concepts such as graphic and pattern.
