Özet:

This current study aims to examine the ideas of geography teachers on geography education by asking such questions as how topics in geography are taught, their perceptions about geography education, and how to a better geography education. The study group of the research consists of 50 geography teachers working in public schools in Sivas, Erzurum, Kayseri, Yozgat, and Ardu Provinces in the academic year 2019-2020. This research, which aims to reveal the views of social studies teachers on geography education in social studies lessons, is a qualitative study. Phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the data collection and interpretation process. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect data. A semi-structured interview form is a type of interview that follows the subjects brought up during the interview in addition to the subjects determined by the researcher, new questions can be asked, the order of the questions can be changed or changes are made according to the situation in the planned questions. As a result of the research, it has been concluded that social studies teachers have the transfer of physical environment and human interaction regarding the definition of geography, geography is important in social studies education, the topics, acquisition, and lesson time allocated for geography instruction is insufficient, activity-based teaching is preferred for studying geography topics, geography achievements of social studies teachers in the social studies course are appropriate, clear and plain. In addition, it has been concluded that they mostly preferred the constructivist approach, learning through presentation as a strategy, and instruction method, and mostly used the multiple-choice test in the assessment process.
