Abstract:

Rapid population growth, industrialization, changes in social life conditions, unconscious interventions and restorations, inadequate protection plans, and rapid technological developments lead to identity confusion in the cities. As a result of this uncontrolled urbanization and efforts to adapt to modernity, historical places and textures reflecting the spatial identity of cities are being destroyed. Accordingly, the traditional street patterns of our cities tend to deteriorate. Traditional streets of Kahramanmaraş are not also different from this situation. With the concept of identity in recent years, local governments have increased efforts to revive the history of cities. This situation increases the necessity of including other physical components that make the historical artifacts more understandable visually and culturally in the preservation and restoration works of traditional urban spaces and residences. In this context, the study is based on an overview of the physical components that contribute to the formation of the characters of Bahtiyar Slope and Hacı Osman Street, the two most prominent examples in the traditional streets of Kahramanmaraş and the determination of characteristics of related components. The method of the study consists of three stages. First of all, a detailed literature review was carried out on the physical components determining the character of the streets. In these scans, it has revealed that the layout of the house-courtyard/garden-street is the most expressive among the components that make up the traditional street character. In the second stage of the study, the quality and quantity of the physical components of the research area were determined. In the last stage, the relationships of the physical components contributing to the traditional street texture are evaluated. As a result of the study, it has been determined that the traditional street texture of Kahramanmaraş is shaped by the historic houses and their courtyard/garden-street orders. The most important physical component characterizing this texture is the door (86%).
