Çağdaş coğrafyanın başlıca temel kavramlarından bir kısmı da konum, yer, insan-çevre ilişkisi, dolaşım ve bölge diye hatırlanabilirler. Ülkelerin ve insanların birbirine yaklaştığı globalleşen dünyamızda doğal (fiziki) ve kültürel (beşeri) çevrenin birbirinden ayrılmaz bir bütün olduğu ve insanın bu bütün içinde çok önemli bir rol oynadığı görülmektedir. Yerküre ‘nin bölümleri olan litosfer, hidrosfer, atmosfer, biyosferin birbirleriyle ve insanla çok sıkı bir ilişkisi vardır. Bundan dolayı yer küreye onu çevreleyen atmosferle birlikte bu terimlerin bütününü ifade eden 'ekosfer' denilmektedir. Beş ana coğrafi temanın öğretilmesi coğrafyanın anlaşılması ve ekosfer içinde insanın rolünün kavranması bakımından büyük önem taşır. Bu çalışmada bu kavramlar açıklanmış ve bunların pratik öğretilmesi ile ilgili örnek uygulamalar verilmiştir.
