Abstract:

The aim of this study is to identify the perceptions of female primary school teachers on carrier barriers that stem from reasons related to “family”, “social structure”, “economic conditions”, “school environment and neighborhood”, and “education, gender, working hours, age, and marital status”. The population in this research consists of 406 teachers who work at 25 primary schools in the Bayrampaşa district in İstanbul and who were selected through simple random sampling out of 950 teachers working in the same district. The research is quantitative by nature. A questionnaire that consists of 31 items was used in the research. The scale was developed by Köstek. The items in the questionnaire were 5-point Likert type. T- test and Single-sided Variance were used for data analysis and values such as percentage, frequency, medium, and standard deviation were computed. Based on the data, it was found that female teachers experienced medium level carrier barriers due to “family”, “education, gender, working hours, age and marital status” and low level carrier barriers due to “social structure”, “school environment and neighborhood conditions” and “economical circumstances”. Significant differences in the variables gender, number of children and length of service were also found.
