This paper reviews the emergence and extension of governmental video surveillance of public space in the Province of Buenos Aires, focusing on national and provincial policies that made possible the spreading of CCTV systems within Buenos Aires’ territory. We mainly used the analysis of documents, which is complemented by interviews with actors involved in the design and execution of these policies as well as secondary sources. We examined the localities under video surveillance and observed that between 2007 and 2014 all the municipalities have installed CCTV systems in public spaces. We propose a periodization of the extension of video cameras throughout Buenos Aires territory linked to the deployment of provincial security policies and we use maps to illustrate the expansion of video surveillance.
