Abstract Therapeutic communities FOR THE TREATMENT OF drug ADDICTIONS are institutions that, through the interaction between their residents, should holistically focus on the individual. With regard to health issues, they should follow the sanitary provisions of RDC 29/2011 by Anvisa. This work aimed to characterize the health conditions of therapeutic communities, in terms of their compliance with RDC 29/2011, pursuing a better quality of life of their residents. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach with 28 therapeutic communities voluntarily serving drug users, located in Goiânia/GO and metropolitan area, and also including the city of Anapolis/GO. We used a semi-structured questionnaire; the obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show that 39.3% of the communities had sanitary license, and 46.4% were in the process of receiving it. Most of the water came from artesian wells or tanks, with proper storage, but without proper disinfection. Health concerns with food environments were identified. The use of PPE was not observed in clothes washing or waste disposal. Medications were stored in accordance with the rules of RDC 29/2011 and residents often went to get health care in the SUS. It was concluded that health conditions of RDC 29/2011 tend to be observed in the surveyed communities. However, there is much to develop in relation to health issues pursuing the welfare and health of residents.
