Abstract:

The Faculty of Theology is the university institutions where the higher religious teaching is carried out. Academics in these institutions have almost two basic religious concepts. These are the traders who adopt the traditional Islamic concept and the innovators who are critically approached to this concept. In the Theological Schools, the Islamic understanding of Ehl-i Sünnet is dominated in general. The innovators who are rooted in this understanding are in a minority position. The innovators who present ideas contrary to the basic concepts of Ehl-i Sunnit thought are becoming the center of various tensions. This article focuses on the attitudes and behaviors of the traders and innovators in the Theological Faculty towards the academics who represent the religious speeches they see as 'the other'. The article’s data was obtained through conversations with 49 people from innovative and traditional academics at the Theological Faculty in different regions of Turkey. In the Faculty of Theology, the intellectual multiplication at the level of speech is regarded as a value by both traders and innovators. But in practice, mental multiplication is faced with serious problems. Some traders clearly see some of the ideas of the innovators as an attack on Islam and have a serious threat perception about it. These are the people who have an innocentious attitude towards the innovators. Traditional authoritative behaviors are mostly practiced in the form of marking, discrimination, harassment and isolation. The tendency to adopt intellectual multiplicity in the innovators is more. However, among the innovators, there are also speeches and practices that isolate the traders. These people are concerned about radicalism towards the traditions.
