Abstract:

Introduction: Driedness is a significant symptom that restricts oral intake, which can cause patients to stay in the hospital for intravenous fluid treatment and extended stay in the hospital. In our study, we aimed at comparing the rates of hospitalization and re-application due to vomiting in the seven days after application in two groups of children with acute gastroenteritis who received and not received intramuscular ondansetron. Methods: Dossiers of patients between December 2015-February 2016 (non-ondansetron period) and December 2019-February 2020 (non-muscular ondansetron period) with acute gastroenteritis (ICD A09) diagnosed in our child emergency clinic were retroactively analyzed. Patients involved in the study were studied in two groups, one dose intramuscular ondansetron fields, the first group, and the second group of those who did not receive ondansetron treatment. Our primary goal was to determine the re-application and deposit rates of both groups within the first 7 days. Results: 21% of patients receiving Ondansetron treatment and 28% of the non-ondansetron group recalled to emergency service during the first 7 days due to vomiting. In the comparison of both groups, the recurring application was 5 % of the group I patients and 13 % of the group II patients needed intravenous fluid (probability ratio = 0.3; 95% confidence range = 0.19-0,59) and the emergency service was required. Result: Intra-muscular ondansetron therapy reduces the rate of re-application to the hospital in acute gastroenteritis children with vomiting, re-application sleeping and the need for intravenous fluid.
