Aim: Formaldehyde is widely used in daily life. However; formaldehyde is a chemical agent having many harmful effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the harmful effects of formaldehyde exposure on the livers of rats and possible protective effects of Nigella sativa oil against these harmful effects. Materials and Methods: In our study, 66 adult male rats were used. Formaldehyde was inhaled for five days per week and eight hours per day in glass cages. We had two control groups for 4 and 13 weeks study periods. There were five rats in each control groups. The other fifty-six rats were evenly divided into eight groups (7 rats in each group) randomly for formaldehyde inhalation for 4 weeks and 13 weeks. These animals were exposed to 5 and 10 ppm formaldehyde. Nigella Sativa oil was administered 1 ml / kg / day (po). At the end of the study, all rats were killed by decapitation, and liver tissues were removed. For the light microscopic evaluation, liver tissues were embedded in paraffin blocks after histological procedures. Results: Based on the results of histopathological evaluation in liver tissues, mild hydropic degenerations were observed in all 5 ppm formaldehyde inhalation groups. Furthermore; severe hydropic degenerations were observed in all 10 ppm formaldehyde inhalation groups. Conclusion: We conclude that exposure of formaldehyde can affects liver. However, Nigella sativa couldn’t improve this degeneration histologically.
