Dil ile yazı ilişkisi oldukça yenidir. İlk biçim olarak düşünülen bir kök, dil ve dil ailelerinin oluşma zamanlarından kalmış olan ve bütün dillerde çoklukla tek heceli olan yapılardır. Söz kökleri, dillerin sözlüklerinde, eski şiveler arası bölgesel alıntıları ifade eden dal biçimleri ile gösterilirler. Bunlara kardeş kökler (rooth etymons, rooth allomorphes) denir. Bu yazıda konu edilen al-t ~ aş-ak-ı ~ as-t kardeş köklerin, alt ~ atla- ~ alçak ~ aşağı ~ ast ~ esirgemek ~ astar gibi dal biçimleriyle komşu bilgilerin ışığında nasıl kullanıldıkları ortaya konmaya çalışılacaktır.
