Since the past century, we have witnessed that the human body has been re-discovered and that the interest and experience in the body has been opened to an extending area than ever before. While art multiplies its relationships with different disciplines, with its changing structure, its approach and transfer to the body has also changed. The artist who expands the fields of responsibility of the art turns to the body in the direction of expanding its fields of freedom, and turns it into a space or a cage. This study explores the changing perception of the body in terms of philosophy and social content and evaluates the relationships that Contemporary Art establishes with the body in a historic dimension. Within this axis, the Kocaeli University School of Fine Arts Statue Department has intended to translate and discuss the subject through the production arising in the context of the concept of 'Interior External One' in the course of 'Body Jewelry Statue' conducted by me. These examples are aimed at bringing both the student's work to literature and showing what kind of relationship the subject has established with art education.
The physical experience of the person who has a presence with his/her body is significant for his/her perception of the world. It is known that disciplines of art and philosophy play a dominant role on the increase of this as well as the interest in the body throughout the past century. The first part of the study emphasizes the relation between the Western civilization and the body with specific references to philosophy. In the second part, a selection of important artists of the 20th century who consider body as a pedestal and the sculptural-body relations established by them are presented. The final part aims to form a literature for the works produced with different techniques and material within the 'Body-Jewelry-Sculpture' course for the students of the Department of Sculpture on the concept of “Straight Out”, which is determined by various forms current body takes place, and to handle the body and sculpture productions in modern art within art education and thereby improve the discussion platforms. Descriptive method was used to present the subject in a versatile and in-depth manner. Qualitative data collection technique was used to obtain artistic production samples in which the body turned into a pedestal. Visual records, written documents and various images were collected in accordance with the literature review and the reviews of the artworks related to the subject. The part where student works are presented consists of text and documents developed in the production processes within the course.
