Yakup Kadri’s novel Yaban is an expression of the intellectual-public gap in Turkey that manifests itself today. After the losses of World War I, young soldier Ahmet Celal, who settled in a village in Anatolia, saw how the peasants were uninterested in national liberation struggle. Convincing them to join the war was in vain. Villagers were not willing to support the war because they only cared about their comfort and were not interested in war. They live different life from Ahmet Celal’s world. His national struggle was not their struggle. Novel is a realistic story, where the gap between the Turkish intellectuals and the Turkish peasants is expressed
