Background/aim: In the literature, there are contradictory reports about the prognostic value of neuroendocrine differentation like component of colorectal carcinomas. However, in general this kind of differentation has been accepted as pear prognostic factor. The relationship between focal neuroendocrine differentiation like component and independent prognostic parameters including histological type, grade, stage, and necrosis was prospectively evaluated in 50 colorectal carcinomas diagnosed between 1997 and 1998. Materials and Methods: The tumors were classified in two groups according to the presence of macroscopic necrosis, and in three groups according to their histological type and grade. Tumors were staged using modified Dukes staging system. Results: Focal neuroendocrine differentiation like component was detected in 21 cases overall. Forty-eight percent of adenocarcinomas and 18% of mucinous carcinomas showed neuroendocrine differentiation like component but the difference was not significant. Also there was no significant association between grade and stage and the presence of focal neuroendocrine differentiation like component. However, tumors with macroscopic necrosis displayed a significantly higher rate of focal neuroendocrine differentiation than nonnecrotic lesions. Conclusion: We observed a significant correlation between focal neuroendocrine differentiation like component and necrosis, which is an important prognostic parameter.
