Özet:

Şişhane District, which has a long trade history, is one of the most important crafts neighbourhood in Istanbul, known as the center of the lighting market. In time, clustering of workshops, shops and wholesalers constitute an urban texture that gives the district’s specific identity. However, following tourismoriented urban policies give rise to negative impacts on this urban texture and identity. Large scale projects such as Haliçport, Galataport, Tarlabaşı Renewal Project, Golden Horn Metro Bridge and Golden Horn Sub-sea Tunnel are forcing the workshops to move from the city center to peripheries. This study focuses on the effects of these policies and transformations threatening Şişhane district and recommends an approach to preserve the space together with the traditional manufacturing network. Artisans still maintain their presence together with other actors in Şişhane and its surroundings. This is important both for themselves and for protecting urban identities against different threats caused by tourism. Emphasizing the structure of manufacturing and its role to construct the identity in the existing urban context, the paper looks for answers to the problems of urban and cultural continuity.  Within the scope of the research, firstly the strong elements which constitute the identity of Golden Horn and Galata were handled together with the spatial development of the region. After explaining the current situation in the region, the subject is discussed through the effects of urban policies that threaten identity. The study area is defined within the boundaries of Tersane Caddesi in the south, Refik Saydam Caddesi in the west, Büyük Hendek Caddesi, Küçük Hendek Caddesi in the north and Kemeden Caddesi in the east. In this research, mapping and site observations are the main methods to collect data in the crafts neighborhood. This study aims to be a source for the future research and improvement initiatives of Şişhane.
