Abstract:

Opioids are often used in the treatment of pain. In addition to the analgesic effect of opioids, there are also some side effects. The most common and detected discomforting side effects are constipation. Constipation, which negatively affects the quality of life of patients and the adjustment to treatment, increases the costs of health care, extends the duration of stay in the hospital, increases the hospitalization applications, can lead to overcoming, reducing and even terminating the treatment doses. In constipation management, pharmacological approaches such as laxative, lavman, opioid receptor antagonists, patient training, increased fluid and fiber intake, exercise, abdominal massage, and non-pharmacological approaches are recommended. However, in literature, an effective maintenance protocol in opioid-related constipation management has not been defined. In light of literary data, patients with opioid medication should necessarily be routine assessed in terms of constipation and clinical protocols for the management of opioid-related constipation should be created. The health care team should be informed about the opioid-related constipation and management. Randomized controlled studies are required to assess the effectiveness of the approaches involved in opioid-related constipation management. This aggregation was done with the aim of increasing the level of knowledge and awareness of the health team about opioid-related constipation.
