Abstract History of Anesthesiology and Reanimation in Turkey can be compiled from original sources in archives as referenced in “Bibliography of Surgical Essays” by Nimet Taşkıran, and extraction of anectodes from interviews with witnesses. According to Cemalettin Öner, historical development of Anesthesiology in Turkey can be split into 4 distinct periods, pre-1900, 1900-1933, 1933-1950 and post-1950. Until 1950, West-educated Surgeons have shown interest in Anesthesiology as well and even had their related applications published in the medical journals of the time. After 1950, with the parallel efforts by Ministry of Health and Istanbul Univesity, Faculty of Medicine and later by other Faculties of Medicine in Turkey, Anesthesiology residency has been officially accepted in 1956. The education began first in Haydarpasa Numune Hospital by Dr. Wirtinger and Cemalettin Öner was the first resident. The developments in Istanbul Univesity Faculty of Medicine was led by Sadi Sun and after many years of struggle, Institute of Anesthesiology was established in 1959, presided by Sadi Sun, who had been promoted to Associate Professor in 1961. Similar developments have taken place in other Faculties and Anesthesiology departments have been established, at Ankara University led by Refik Paykoç in 1958, at Hacettepe University led by Emel Çobanoğlu in 1959, and at Ege University led by Ahmet Tutan. In 1962, the name of the therepautic area had changed to Anesthesiology and Reanimation. Under the leadership of Anesthesiology specialists, studies in therepautic areas of intensive care and Algology has begun and continued to date.
