Objectives: Healthy lifestyle is defined as the ability to control behaviours that may affect one's health, and to choose behaviours appropriate to their health status while they organize their daily activities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the health promotion behaviours of university students who are studying nursing and medicine and to determine the sociodemographic characteristics that affect these behaviours. Materials and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study, and the universe of the study was composed of 1367 students in Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine and Department of Nursing of Health Sciences Faculty. The stratified sampling was used for the sampling method. Data were collected between March-May 2016 through a questionnaire form for sociodemographic characteristics and the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors-II (HLB-II) scale. Results: A total of 534 people were included in the study, including 283 medical students and 251 nursing students. The median age was 21.50 years (min-max 19-24). 26.78% (n = 143) were male and 73.22% (n = 391) were female. The mean score of HLB-II scale was 130.00 ± 17.62. The highest score was found to be spirituality and the lowest score was taken from physical activity subscale. The general scale, health responsibility, nutrition and interpersonal relationship scores of nursing students were found to be significantly higher than the medical students (p <0,05). Conclusion: In this study, which includes medical and nursing students, the application of healthy lifestyle behaviours was found to be moderate. It is important to organize programs to increase health awareness in universities, to develop and improve educational programs to increase current awareness of health, to disseminate physical activity programs in order to create generations with high-level health consciousness and healthy lifestyle behaviours.
