We aimed to determine the rate of cigarette smoking, level of nicotine addiction and the associated factors among nursing students.METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted on students of the Ataturk University Nursing High School. All students were planned to be included, however, 311 of 357 nursing students participated willingly. Demographic Information Form and Fagerstrom Nicotine Dependence Test were used to collect the data.RESULTS: Smokers constituted 12.9% of all the participants. Sophomores had the highest proportion of smokers with a ratio of 15.4%. Nicotine addiction level scores were classifi ed as low in 62.5% of the smokers. Friendship with a smoker was selected as a reason for starting smoking in 46.5% of the smoker participants and 34.8% of them reported that they continue smoking to overcome the stress originating from school and classes. Age, income and residence didn’t infl uence smoking status. The rate of smoking was lower among students with a maternal parent who received less education, however higher among the students with a paternal parent who received higher education. The nicotine dependency level was not affected by the class, income, suffer from a health problem and the thought that smoking was harmful. The nicotine dependency level increased with the age of the participants.CONCLUSION: Cigarette smoking usually starts before pre-university period. Parental education level effects smoking and nicotine addiction status and the nicotine dependency increases by age in smokers.
