The XIX. Since the second half of the century there has been a significant increase in the number of schools belonging to foreign states opened on the Ottoman territory. The number of foreign schools in the Maraş Sanctuary, which is linked to the province of Aleppo, has rapidly increased. In Maraş; France, Germany, the United States and the UK opened schools at the primary, secondary, high school, and even higher education level. In some of these schools there was a private status, while the orphanage openings were aimed at charitable and professional education. Students in private schools were taught for a certain fee. Though these remunerations were a major source of income for schools, these schools were funded by the country in which the school was pregnant, or by various missionary organizations. The salary of teachers who taught in the school was also paid by the missionary agencies concerned. The student crowd of foreign schools in Maraş was Armenians. The Catholic Armenians preferred French schools, while the Protestants went to American and German schools. Muslims prefer these schools very rarely.
