Nezihe Meriç, 1950 Kuşağı olarak adlandırılan ve Türk öyküsünde büyük bir kırılma yaşatan öykücülerden biridir. Yazar, eserlerinde toplumsal konulara ağırlık vermiştir. Yazarın en çok değindiği sosyal mesele kadının toplumdaki yeri, rolü ve varoluş mücadelesidir. Nezihe Meriç, değindiği tüm sosyal meselelere insanın birey olması, olduğu gibi kabul görmesi, değer verilmesi açısından bakmıştır. Öykülerinde gelenekçi yaklaşıma sahip olan kadınlarla (anneler, komşular, aile büyükleri) kendini bir birey olarak görüp her türlü kararında özgürce davranmak isteyen “yeni” kadınlar çatışma halindedir. Nezihe Meriç, dönemin özgürlükçü kadın ruhunun sesi olmuş, onun yaşama mücadelesinden, geçim sıkıntısına, evlilik sorunlarından toplumsal önyargılara kadar yaşadığı pek çok sorunu cesurca dile getirmiştir. Nezihe Meriç, öykülerinde bireyin değişimini tüm ayrıntılarıyla anlatmasının yanı sıra toplumsal değişmelere de çok önem veren bir yazardır. Aydın bir insan sorumluluğuyla hareket eden Nezihe Meriç, toplumun sosyal hayatındaki değişim ve dönüşümleri dikkatle takip etmiştir. Yazar, içinde yaşadığı toplumu gözlemlemiş, birçoğunda kendi yaşam gerçekliğinden izler taşıyan öyküler kaleme almıştır. Yazar öykülerinde, toplumsal değerlerin değişimi, göç olgusunun sebep olduğu sıkıntılar, modernleşme adı altında yaşanan kültürel yozlaşma gibi sosyal konulara da değinir.
Nezihe Meriç is one of the storytellers, who is called the 1950 Generation and has experienced a great break in the Turkish story. The author focused on social issues in his works. The social issue that the author mostly refers to is the place and role of women in society and the struggle for existence. Nezihe Meriç looked at all the social issues she touched on in terms of being human and her being an individual, being accepted as she is, and being valued. Women who have a traditional approach in their stories (mothers, neighbors, family elders) are in conflict with “new” women who see themselves as individuals and want to act freely in all their decisions. Nezihe Meriç was the voice of the libertarian woman spirit of the period, and bravely expressed her many problems from her struggle to survive, her financial difficulties, from marriage problems to social prejudices. Nezihe Meriç is a writer who gives great importance to social changes as well as telling the change of the individual in all details in her stories. Acting with an enlightened human responsibility, Nezihe Meriç has carefully followed the changes and transformations in the social life of the society. The author observed the society in which he lived, and wrote many stories that bear traces of his own life reality. In his stories, the author also touches on social issues such as the change of social values, the problems caused by the immigration phenomenon, and the cultural degeneration under the name of modernization.
